Manatee Release at Muyuna Amazon Lodge
Join us in the release of manatees on March 22, 2020
Rainforest Awareness Rescue Education Center (RAREC) in collaboration with Muyuna Lodge, will release two MANATEES (Trichechus inunguis) on the Yanayacu River, in the Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Reserve, in Iquitos, Peru, on March 22, 2020.
Since 1999, Muyuna Lodge has been carrying out environmental conservation work, partnered with the community of San Juan de Yanayacu. GREGORY and JENNIFER are the names of the two critically endangered mammals. Its release will set a meaningful benchmark for all of Muyuna employees and for all upcoming environmental management processes in our lodge. Both animals were found held in captivity in Iquitos and were rescued by RAREC, back in 2017.
The release process
RAREC rescues and reorients threatened specimens of the Amazonian wildlife, as well as conveying accurate scientific knowledge to preserve the Amazon Rainforest.
The Manatee Release it is a project is funded by RAREC and Muyuna Lodge, which with their investment the use of telemetry devices, field observations, and data logging is possible. The purpose of this project is to obtain precise information and evaluate the protection of the mammals. VHF radio-transmitters will be placed in the animals to measure their location. Through this method, we can track them, study their behavior, displacement, and other relevant parameters that contribute to obtaining data for the long-term conservation pilot plan for this specie.
Juan Jesus, an amphibian-passionate biologist from our team, will be in charge of monitoring the animals, whilst RAREC will hold conferences and workshops about environmental awareness to the nearby communities.
